Definition: A comprehensive examination and diagnosis of most illnesses or disorders of any person by the doctor, with his fingers palpating both wrists of the person to read the shape, force, depth, length, and pace of the pulse, thus collecting ample pathological and physiological information about this person's internal organs and superficial tissues.
Origin: Pulse Diagnosis has been one of the core parts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was on document as early as more than two thousand years ago. Developed later from generation to generation, pulse diagnosis became enriched and sophisticated to a marvelous accuracy and reached its peak of practice in the third century. Unfortunately, through years and years of wars and chaos in Chinese history, its genuine techniques and knowledge are nearly lost today. Only a rare number of doctors practice it with confidence and accuracy. The way of passing such skills and knowledge to young doctors, for example, mostly through an apprenticeship of only family associates in China, could be the major cause of its gradual dissipation.
Applications: Pulse Diagnosis is applied to detect, even without any information provided by the patient, any illness or disorder of internal organs or musculoskeletal tissues. In terms of holistic medicine, it is applied to find any imbalance or disharmony of human organic system. Pulse Diagnosis can tell not only the current complaints the patient may have, but also the hidden or potential problems he or she is not aware of, thus significantly saving the time from the prolonged question-and-answer session between doctor and patient. The treatment followed is not necessarily based on the patient's expressed symptoms, but based on one's real etiological mechanism, and is designed to reach the root of problems. Such a treatment has therefore been very efficient, and has prevented much wasted time with a lot of trial-and-error therapies.
Postscript: Dr. Anthoney Teng has been performing Pulse Diagnosis for many years as an integrative part of his practice. He has reliably provided accurate holistic diagnosis and subsequent effective treatment for his patients. His unique approach has improved many difficult and even desperate cases not solved by other western or TCM doctors.
